The Business Residence Permit, known throughout the Malawian system as the BRP, authorises a foreign national to reside in Malawi in order to carry on, practise or engage in a business, profession or occupation for gain, profit or reward as a self-employed person, a partner or a proprietor.
Malawian citizenship is applied for through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services in one of several statutory classes, and which class you fall into determines the form, the documents and the qualifying period.
The Malawi e-Visa is the country's official pre-departure visa, issued by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services and applied for exclusively through the government portal at evisa.gov.mw.
By a public notice effective 24 February 2026 and carried on the Government of Malawi's own e-Visa portal, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services announced that nationals of Category Two Countries are eligible to obtain a Visa on Arrival at all designated ports of entry into the Republic of Malawi.
The visitors permit, which the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services also calls the business visit permit, is the short-stay authorisation actually granted to a foreign national on arrival in Malawi.
